Update: Windows 8 Consumer Preview download is finally ready. Microsoft will make it official today, in Barcelona. The event, obviously, is held at World Mobile Congress. The download of the beta system should start at 9 AM EST.  We are pretty sure that the Microsoft servers which are hosting Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be fully loaded in the next minute the session will start. The new beta operating system is expected to bring a lot of new features which should be also integrated in the final Windows 8 release, this autumn. Between them, it is worth noting a Skydrive integration and also a new start screen which differs a lot from what we are used to receive from Microsoft.

The size of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview download should be a little bit over 3 GB. So, we recommend you to start freeing up space on your hard drives or prepare a virtual machine in which you could download and install the 64-bits Consumer Preview image.

Leaked photos are showing the Windows 8 Consumer Preview download and setup process (using product key and not Live ID). It looks like Windows 8 Consumer Preview can be considered as the next beta version. We are saying this, because, yesterday, an unofficial W8 blog (Windowsblogitalia.com) has published some leaked images taken from the setup process of this new version of the much expected operating system.

As far we can see, these images correspond to the setup process that Microsoft has officially described as Windows 8 setup experience. The product key for Consumer Preview is also required.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview can be installed on a machine which is already running the previous version of this platform (7). Therefore, in order to install this operating system (product key required) , you have to download an application, which, in the beginning it will scan all your components of your PC, then it will check if they corresponds to the requirements of this OS. In the end you will receive a compatibility report in which Windows 8 Consumer Preview (beta) will let you know which devices are compatible with it and, also, which are those that seem to be incompatible. This report can be displayed in a more detailed way and you can also copy and print it, too.

Another thing we have observed from the leaked setup images of Windows 8 Consumer Preview (beta) setup is the fact that this operating system is being downloaded into a temporary file on your hard drive, following the installation process to start. At the end of this last process the temporary file will probably be deleted automatically by the OS.

We have observed also that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview (beta) will have a normal installation process which, also, looks pretty much the same with what we had to do in order to setup the Developer Preview. The product key is also required, but this situation has also been observed during the installation of the first beta.

The same website (windowsblogitalia.com) has declared that Windows 8 Consumer Preview download should be available to public after 15th of February (but until the beginning of March, 2012). Unfortunately we have no news regarding what kind of product key will be required in order to install it, and if Microsoft will offer them for free.

Update: a leaked image on the internet proves that Windows 8 Consumer Preview is in fact build 8220. this means that this test version should become the beta candidate for the operating system which will be released this year by the Redmond based company.

The leaked image has been posted on PCbeta.com. We can see in this image a lot of useful information such the candidate build no. and also the its code. Therefore we can pull the conclusion that Windows 8 Consumer Preview should be available for download as beta version.

There are no information to prove the fact that Windows 8 Consumer Preview will need a product key or not.

However, it is our duty to highlight the fact that the source of this photo is not official. Therefore there are some chances that the image to be not so reliable as everybody thinks.

Update 2: Another detail has been revealed regarding the Windows 8 Consumer Preview download. The taskbar in this OS could have also the role of a dock which will appear in the start menu. This is possible only when the charm bar is activated. This detail has been revealed by one of the My Digital Life forum, which has the Canouna nickname.

All these details make us think that Windows 8 Consumer Preview is very close to a leak, which is bad thing for Microsoft, nut, as we know, it happened before also.

We have also uploaded the leaked picture which seems to contain (we have used the “seems” word because we don’t know for sure if this picture is not a fake) all those interesting details like build number, name of the OS (Windows 8 Consumer Preview) and product key.

Update 3: It looks like nowadays everybody wants to find out more and more details regarding the new release which will show up in a few days: Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Everybody is asking where to download it from and what product key should be used. There are still no answers to these kind of questions but we keep receiving other kind of news. Most of them are related to small details, like the disappearance of the Start button in the new interface and, also we receive all kind of updates on the look of this new OS.

Therefore, we have some new leaked images which provide a view on the start display of Windows 8 Consumer Preview,  a new start menu which appears when you roll your mouse over the lower left corner, newly designed icons, an updated setup screen (the update refers to the fact that instead of having the DP you will be now provided with instructions containing the “Windows 8 Consumer Preview” syntax).  Also, an updated Explorer menu will be provided together with an Apps list which is now divided by categories (in DP the apps were placed in alphabetical order) and a new charms screen.

There are also some other highlights which deserves to be mentioned. Windows 8 Consumer Preview download will integrate the Windows To Go feature. We see some changes in the browser which is designed by Microsoft: Internet Explorer. It comes with some icon designs and gets rid of Start Orb. The page viewing area looks the same with the one we have been introduced with in DP.

As you might have observed, until now, we don’t have anything spectacular in Windows 8 Consumer Preview. And the most important, we don’t know when the download process will start and if we will be provided with a product key.

Update 4: It looks like Windows 8 Consumer Preview will include several games, popular games like Angry Birds, Pinball, full House Poker, Ms Splosion Man, Toy Soldiers and some other titles, too. Of course, Solitaire will not miss, either.

The games can be found in Windows Store, which is a feature that has been integrated in this new version of the OS. The prices for these games varies between $1.49 and $999.

Update 5: It looks like Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be available for download on 29th of February. Microsoft has officially announced today that the beta version will be presented in the Mobile World Congress which is Held in Barcelona. The download will become available in the same day the new test system is introduced. You will be able to get your copy between 3 and 5 PM (CET).

Also, Windows 8 Consumer Preview will receive a multitude of new applications like: Music, Videos, Mail, Photos, Messaging, Skydrive etc. However, most of them are some improved versions of the old apps that we are all familiar with. For example, Messaging, is just a reiteration of the old Live Messenger.

      1. Of course it will, Why shouldn’t it? It’s not the Release, it’s a public preview, that and in their official statement on how this setup experience will work they say that they pre-key the installer before the user downloads.

  1. Its frustrating to wait for Windows 8 consumer PReview just to test your application. Microsoft should be more cooperative from this point of view

  2. personally i think that it is too much noise regarding this new os.i don’t think it will help any developer if it is released so late. DP didn’t help either.this is a fail

  3. As we approach the release of the Beta version of Windows 8, Microsoft renamed the Consumer Preview, leaks pictures of a recent build () 8220 of the OS just deliver technical choices made by the publisher. Thus, we learn the disappearance of the famous Start button available button in the lower left corner of the computer screen since Windows 95. Loss this button will however not affect the functionality of the Start menu, which can be invoked by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard or moving the mouse in the lower left corner of the taskbar. The location of the Start button would be another feature. It seems that the approach of the mouse cursor on the corner of the screen will toggle between the UI and Metro traditional Windows desktop. Charms menu of Windows 8 Consumer Preview download with product key, contain a group of icons transparent, allowing access the main functions of the OS such as search, file sharing, etc.. It will also be possible to bring up a menu to change the computer settings. This information is to be taken in moderation, since they have not been confirmed. Anyway, we’ll know more about Microsoft’s option at the end of this month with the availability of this version, which will provide a first look at the beta of Windows applications gallery Store.

  4. You say the Windows 8 Consumer Preview takes 10. “But missing the Beta, the RC and then the final version. So we still have to wait.

I do not know how I work installed by default on the PC, but I do well virtualized.

  5. This is why Microsoft will stand out. He will not take the OS originally made for a telephone to apply it to a shelf, as does competition.
Microsoft to a different view. The tablet is not a “big smartphone” is a kind of complement to the computer, or even a future replacement of our old PC. “Experience”-if I may say-on shelf must be the ‘same’ and PC. The user must be able to regain its programs, the same operation of the OS, the compatibility of its files, roughly the same universe. I personally think it is more appropriate to merge OS tablet PC and OS that OS smartphone and tablet OS. Especially since the shelves are increasingly powerful, increasingly purchased, and start easily substitute some tasks we usually did on our computer (the people I know who have say they lit shelves less often their computer). If a Windows 8 Consumer Preview tablet may be required to replace a PC, it can never replace cons by telephone. Going back to the latest news: I did not catch anything. passing in the corner lower left, how the computer / tablet will know if I want to switcher interface tube / classic or if I just want to open the start menu?
