If you ever wondered how that pop-up message from Windows knows when to update your Adobe suite, it happens because there is an Adobe_Updater.exe process running in the background of your Windows. We are going to explain today what is Adobe_Updater.exe process and how you can disable or remove it.

As you can probably tell from its name, Adobe_Updater.exe process is releated to Adobe’s update module for their entire suite. With its help you will know when an update to any of the Adobe software is available for download.

I would like to take this opportunity and remind you that nowadays, internet sites rely quite a lot on using Adobe Flash for animations so it would be wise not to go ahead in removing or disabling Adobe_Updater.exe process unless you really have to. Also worth mentioning is the fact that if you open a document from any website, there is a strong chance that that is going to be a PDF so you will have to use Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. In the next window that opens, you have the option to deselect ‘Automatically check for Adobe updates’. Once you click on OK you will not have Adobe_Updater.exe process running in the background of your Windows session.

If you are not able to access the Adobe Updater preferences menu using the system tray icon, then you can use Task Manager to find the root folder of the Adobe_Updater.exe process and its content. Right click on the process name and select Open File Location.

Windows Explorer will then take you to the Adobe Updater folder so that you can manually execute Adobe_Updater.exe process. A window will open and you will have to click on the Preferences link that you can find on the left side of the window. From there on, you can follow the same steps as above to disable Adobe_Updater.exe process.

How to disable Adobe_Updater.exe process using Adobe Reader?

Another method of disabling Adobe_Updater.exe process would be to use Adobe Reader. Open it using the desktop shortcut or by typing Adobe Reader in the Vista / 7 start menu. Once the program opens, go to Edit > Preferences menu. Somewhere at the bottom of the window that opens you will be able to deselect the ‘Check for updates’ box. From now on, Adobe_Updater.exe process will not let you know when new updates are available for download.
