A group of software developers have discovered clues about this next step on a preliminary edition of the Mountain Lion, the next version of OS X. There have been indications that the next generation of Apple notebooks will incorporate  high pixel density screens, namely Retina displays that equip the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and the new iPad.

Retina displays that Apple will progressively incorporated into their devices are characterized by double the number of pixels on height and double the number of pixels on width versus normal LED displays, so that in the same space they show four times more pixels. Therefore, all the graphic elements of the applications must be sized to occupy all the available space when the apps runs on a Retina display device.

How did the software developers discover that Apple plans to extend the high-density displays on the MacBook: the preliminary version of OS X 10.8, which is available only for the developers, includes an instant messaging application called Messages, allowing chats between computers, iPads and iPhones, and apparently due to an error, the above mentioned application features an icon for ‘audio calls’ which is four times of a better quality than normal.

Thus, taking into account the renewal cycle of the Apple products, it is foreseeable that in late summer, Tim Cook and the Cupertino based tech giant will try to offer us MacBooks equipped with the same spectacular displays as the new iPad. What is still to be seen is whether the current product line will be maintained or, as rumored, the current 15-inch MacBook Pro will disappear and the Retina displays will only be incorporated into the ultralight MacBook Air.
