As you all know, iOS 5 is available in iTunes starting with 12th of October. In this tutorial I will show what are the necessary things you should do before proceeding to the iOS 5 update, through iTunes.
This are just my personal recommendations, so there is no need to follow all of them if you don’t feel it is necessary for you.
I am sure that many of you will want to to update their iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 because of the great features it comes with. I personally lovethe most the notifications system.
So let’s start with some advices needed to prepare your iPhone before updating to iOS 5. i will be referring to the data you have on the phone and also to the limited possibilities that you will encounter after the update will be done, while being at the unlock and jailbreak stage.
Fist of all, I recommend you to make a gneral cleaning of your iPhone. Choose wisely the applications you will need to use in the new iOS 5. You should consider giving up on the apps you have used once or twice. I would eeven recomend you to uninstall them right now.
After selecting them (if you have done that) you need to sync your data on the iPhone with the one in iTunes because, when you will be doing the update to iOS 5, these will disappear. After successfully installing the new iOS 5 you can transfer them back very easy, with some simple clicks. In order to transfer the applications from your iPhone in your PC, you just have to right click on your device (iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS) in the list on the left, in iTunes, and then choose “Transfer purchases”. Depending on the number of applications you need to transfer, the time for this process could take from seconds to a few minutes.
The same thingyou need to do with the pictures, music, and videoclips you have stored in your iPhone. Please take care to syncronise all of them (if you haven’t already done this) in order to back them up and to move them back after upgrading to iOS 5.
Now, we arrive at the most interesting part of this article: the one related to jailbreak and unlock. If you depend on jailbreak, then you must know that there is, for the moment, just one tethered jailbreak solution, when reffering to iOS 5 beta. This means that each time you restart your iPhone you will have to connect it to your PC in order to activate the jailbreak again and have a proper start-up. But why to still worry on using iOS 5 beta when we have the official release? Let’s just hope that the untethered jailbreak will come soon.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have any good news regarding a simple unlock of the phone. The only solution available now is Ultrasnow, which has received support for iOS 5. This is a good solution for the iPhone users which need to keep their baseband untouched. The Gevey SIM Card is already available for upgrading from iOS 4.3.x to iOS 5.
If you find yourself in one of the above mentioned situations, do’t upgrade immediately to iOS 5, don’t jailbreak it asap etc. You need to let the experts to do some test and then decide if an upgrade to iOS 5 would be a good move.
Those being said, enjoy your iOS 5 on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS
