This article will teach you how to tether your iPhone/ iPad via WiFi to a Windows/ OS X computer, using HTML 5 technology. A jailbreak solution is NOT required.
We have been very happy a while ago when we found out that our smartphones will be able to share their internet connection. Also, the carriers have announced that they are going to offer unlimited web access at decent prices.
I, personally, admit that this news made me very happy. I travel a lot and, of course, during these travels, I use write articles for onebiTzero. Therefore I need my laptop and an internet connection. That’s exactly why I was so happy. My iPhone was going to share its internet access so I could use while doing my job at this site.
Well, things proved to be not as I was expecting. Indeed, my iPhone came with the capability of sharing its internet connection. But this was limited by the carrier. First of all this happened due to the fact there were no applications in the Appstore which could manage these possibilities of sharing the internet connection. Then, the carriers themselves started to offer these kind of applications, but, of course, they wanted monthly fees for these applications, even if the offer for “unlimited” web access was still valid.
Of course some workarounds and tweaks have appeared in order to let the internet connection to be shared. But they are possible only if the phone has been jailbreak. And I am not always confident in this kind of solution.
Last year, in December an official tethering solution appeared officially in Appstore. Its name was iTether and it really allowed us to the tether the internet connection with any other device. Unfortunately it was retracted from there after 48 hours. Probably Apple wanted to show the carriers that there is no need to request fees for a thing which is already possible for free.
The great news I have for you is that itether is back again. Officially it entered the Appstore a couple of days ago. It is not free, so you have to pay $30/ year but I consider that it is worth the money. Consider paying one time per year a fee which could become recurrent with your carrier. The tethering with this app can be done via Wi-Fi, on the opposite to the old version which allowed only USB connection. The technology which iTether is using is web based: HTML 5.
I have prepared a tutorial on how to install iTether and benefit from iPhone internet connection sharing on your Windows or OS X computer:
- First of all you have to sign up here. After the singing up process has neded, you will have to download the iTether application on your computer;
- After the download has ended, you need to open this application on your computer. You will be provided with the steps that you have to follow in order to setup a connection between your Windows/ OS X computer and your iPhone. Connect your phone to this newly created network by accessing its “Settings” menu;
- Access the following address: tether.com/web. Your personal data needs to be inserted there;
- Now your computer must have been connected to your iPhone. You can check this by observing the data packets which are being sent to each of the devices.
iTether will let you share the internet connection from your iPad2, too. It also does not require a jailbreak in order to accomplish this task.
