The software developer Adobe plans to dismiss 750 employees and the future of its program for mobile devices, Flash Player, is uncertain.
Company officials said that this measure affects employees in Europe and North America, 750 employees meaning 7% of the total labor force of Adobe, according to BBC.
Adobe representatives said the cuts are caused by the decision to focus more on media and digital marketing.
Flash is used for viewing movies, running games and other applications. This plug-in serves Android phones and tablets as the Blackberry Playbook, but Apple never used it for iPhone or iPad .Steve Jobs, Apple’s fonder and former CEO, criticized the program, saying it is not reliable, it represents a threat to security and it uses a lot of battery.Adobe defended their plug-in stating that their software “continues to be the dominant tool” for everything that is related to Internet media.
Other users have criticized the performance of Flash on devices, and Microsoft recently announced that it will not use this product on the tablet interface of the next browser for Windows 8.
Current versions of Flash for Android and the BlackBerry PlayBook will continue to be supported, but development resources will be invested in HTML5. Those who want to continue to benefit from the Adobe ecosystem in developing applications for these platforms are encouraged to turn to Adobe AIR in order to create native applications.
It’s clear that this decision will upset the Flash Player followers who were pointing their finger at Apple, a company that always refused to implement Flash on their iOS system, arguing that it has no future. It seems that Steve Jobs was right again.
NB: It’s crazy how, writing this article, my Flash Player crashed 2 times listening to music on Youtube.
