Automatically Add WordPress Featured Image For Old And New Posts [How To]

The WordPress blogging platform is one of the best available out there, due to the strong user community that develops all kind of plug-ins to make your work a little easier. When WordPress 3.0 was released, it introduced a new function called ‘featured image’ which allows you to add a unique featured image for each post, header or page.

If you’ve just created your blog using a paid WordPress theme, then there should not be any issue to add your own images as it is very likely that it supports the ‘featured image’ standard for your posts or blog’s header. The tricky part is how to automatically add WordPress featured image for old and new posts if you already have a huge database of blog posts on your hands.

If you have upgraded to a professional WordPress theme and would like to use the featured image for the blog header or posts, you can use a plug-in to automatically add WordPress featured image for the old and new posts. The plug-in called Auto Featured Image can be found on the WordPress community website and can be downloaded using the link that we have provided at the end of this article.

Once you download the plug-in you should go in WordPress and open the Auto Featured Image settings. There you will find a button called Generate thumbnails, which will update your posts or header with the custom image that you’ve selected in the new WordPress theme.

What the plug-in will do is to scan your WordPress data base and select the first image to automatically add the WordPress Feature Image. Please note that the bigger the archive is, the longer it will take for the plug-in to update your WordPress blog with Featured Image.

Auto Featured Image is a great plug-in but as with any other tool, there are some issues that should be soon addressed. For instance, when you choose to automatically add the WordPress featured image, once it finishes the plug-in will not let you know how many posts were processed successfully and how many not.

Also, we find a bit annoying the fact that you cannot select other image than the first from the post to use it as the WordPress featured image.
