In the last quarter of 2011 Apple became the leading manufacturer in the IT world, selling the most PC, according to data from consulting firm Canalys, which includes tablets as part of the PC segment.
The half bitten apple company sold 20 million units of the total 120 million that were sold from October to December. Of those, 15 million were iPads and 5 million Macs. With these figures the Cupertino technology giant has surpassed HP and has earned 17 % of the “PC” market.
Canalys says that the total PC market (including desktops, netbooks, notebooks and tablets) has grown by 16% during the last quarter. However, if the tablets are excluded from this analysis, the results are less encouraging: the PC market had a 0.4% drop in sales. Partly to blame for this decline may be the floods in Thailand, which have impacted some assembly plants.
Among the five leading PC manufacturers, Lenovo, similar to Apple has managed to increase its market share during this interval. Canalys explains Lenovo’s success by investing outside of their core markets and the purchase of Medion in Germany, which would have allowed them to double their shipments in Western Europe during the second half of 2011.
None of the other manufacturers listed in the top five has improved its numbers. Both HP, Dell and Acer (fourth and fifth respectively) have seen their sales figures drop in Q4.
The analysis also spoke of the ultrabook, the devices meant to save the PC market. Canalys thinks that ultrabooks will start to gain strength later this year and that in the first quarter of 2012 its adoption will still be “very limited”.
